[:br]

A reação

[:en]The first act of Facebook against fake news in Brazil was registered on Wednesday (25). The Reuters says: 196 pages and 87 accounts linked to the alt-right MBL group were taken off the air. Reason: Pages and accounts were part of a fake news broadcast network in the country.

The news is celebrated in the media as the first grateful act against the fake news in the country. The MBL page remains in the air, however, without the support that helped propel the news it was spreading. But after all, is it the beginning of a real war against fake news or a mere propaganda by Mark Zuckerberg to show the society that is concerned about the fact?

This year we had the scandal of Cambrigde Analytica, a company that used Facebook to broadcast fake news in favor of a candidate. His methods are singled out as co-responsible for Donald Trump’s victories in the United States and Brexit’s in England. Zuckerberg went to the dock in world society, accused of accomplice in the manipulation of information and promised to react. In Brazil, it had already announced a partnership with two Fact-Checking agency to map suspicious pages.

The reaction

The MBL reaction was expected. The group accused Facebook of censorship and vowed to fight to reverse the action. In a live tapped shortly after the Reuters news spread, representatives of the movement campaigned against the social network, urged followers to follow YouTube and Whatsapp, in a kind of boycott of Facebook. Detail: Whatsapp also belongs to Zuckerberg and the live was recorded inside Facebook. There is no mention of possibility of leaving the social network that they accuse is being “sold to the other side”.

This is not the first time MBL has attacked Facebook. When news of the social networking partnership with Fact-Checking agencies was announced, the group also attacked, casting doubt on the credibility of those agencies. The speech is similar to that made for left-wing pages like Brazil 247, which also questioned credibility after news of it being classified as fake.

The so-called Argumentum ad hominem, when the criticism is made to the author of the argument and not to the content presented, is recurrent on the internet.

The next chapters

In the coming weeks, when the election begins, Facebook’s attitude will be much questioned. For every false information published by a page, the MBL will say “why was that page not censored and we went?”. Groups linked to the presidential candidates will mutually accuse each other of fake news propaganda, demanding a provision from Facebook. The social network says it’s ready for that.

The fact that the year 2016 is marked by fake news and post-truth, 2018 may be in Brazil the year of fighting the false news. The year that began to act against this and other plagues of social networks. If it will work, only time will tell.

The role of the press

In theory, the press celebrates the closure of fake news broadcasters. In addition to spreading false news, these pages often attack the traditional media directly, accusing them of doing what they do.

It is a fact that the press has lost credibility with the advancement of the internet. It is also true that the press has much of the blame in this story. The siege of the fake news pages may be an opportunity for many media to re-establish themselves as secure information ports. The challenge of journalism is to set a position, to differentiate and with audience. Clickbait, the rampant race for “who gives the news before”, phenomena common in the internet, do not help in this case.[:]
